I Need a Hero

Who isn't familiar with Superman, Batman, Black Panther and Aquaman? Who hasn't pondered the 60-year conundrum DC or Marvel? How many of the 30 comic hero movies released in the last decade have we seen? Lesser known but still wonderfully exciting are Volcanoman and his nemesis Tikiman. Lightbulb Head Dude, Evil Pacman, and who could forget Rainbowman? All of whom are unique creations by our Artworks Artists. We at Access Gallery have decided to dedicate a show to our artist's comic book heroes; and are proud to introduce the world to the first edition comic coloring book The Ultimate Volcanoman. In keeping with our values of repurposing and rethinking what constitutes art, we decided to make an entire gallery show from material purchased at Ikea. We have a long relationship with the retail giant and will imagine what Pop Art pioneers like Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein would do with our big blue retailer. We will have pieces made from nearly every department in the store. Photo and Sculptural pieces will be displayed.

Since 2002, the Kennedy Center and Volkswagen Group of America have teamed up for the VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, a Jean Kennedy Smith Arts and Disability Program, to recognize and showcase the work of emerging young artists living with disabilities, ages 16-25, who are currently residing in the United States. Detour, the 17th exhibition presented as part of the VSA Emerging Young Artists Program, gives 15 young artists the opportunity to display their work in venues across the United States where each…
