Emily vonSwearingen has worked as a lead artist with Access Gallery since 2001. She has an extensive history of creating art programs and working within therapeutic arts including as the former founder of the Artist in Residency program at the Denver Children’s Hospital. She has collaborated with numerous organizations at Access Gallery including the Colorado Center for the Blind, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, DPS STAR program, Easter Seals, Denver Housing Authority and several respite programs. Her projects have focused on arts expression for people with different physical, mental and developmental abilities and have addressed issues such as refugees, suicide prevention, foster care, disability advocacy, chronic illness and poverty.
Emily works in mixed-media, often incorporating forms of storytelling into her therapeutic approach to tactile based art making. She specializes in working with sensory processing disorders by adapting tools, mediums and communication styles to effectively meet individual artists at their level and to empower personal expression through the arts.
