Before there is a story, there is a doll someone else has left behind.

For more than a decade, Access Gallery artist repaints_doll has been giving discarded dolls another life. She redesigns their clothing, changes their hair, creates new details by hand and, somewhere along the way, discovers who each doll is going to become.

Nearly 200 dolls later, no two are the same.

For repaints_doll, transforming the doll is only part of the process. Each one also receives a name, a personality and a story.

The artist says the doll itself often inspires the narrative.

One of those dolls is Savannah.

Savannah has purple and white yarn hair, handmade clothing and a prosthetic leg created as part of her design. But to repaints_doll, those details aren’t simply decorative. They’re clues to a much larger story.

In the narrative she created for Savannah, an accident results in the loss of her leg. When Savannah worries about returning to school, encouragement from her father helps her find the confidence to return as herself.

It’s a story about resilience, friendship and finding your voice.

And it’s one of nearly 200 stories repaints_doll has imagined over the past decade.

Her practice begins with materials that have been discarded or forgotten. Instead of seeing something that has reached the end of its usefulness, she sees possibility.

A new hairstyle. A handmade outfit. A different identity. An entirely new life.

On Access Gallery’s Community Art Wall, The Art of Resilience: Savannah by repaints_doll offered visitors a glimpse into that expansive world of characters and stories.

What began years ago as the transformation of individual dolls has grown into a body of work populated by nearly 200 distinct personalities, each carrying a narrative created entirely by the artist.

For repaints_doll, nothing has to remain what it was when she found it.

Sometimes all it takes is imagination to discover the story that was waiting to be told.
